"Attraction, aversion, hope, fear. Be mindfully aware of these, in your life and in your practice. Some teachers actually encourage students, whether consciously or not, to indulge in these."

As if we have a choice. Well we do at a certain point. But often not. Thanks Dan.

Would another sentence expand upon this?

Hi Julie...more to the point, I agree these are really important issues all of us work on in our spiritual practice, but it seems like they are a part of everything we do in our lives and therefore hard to escape.

From a noble standpoint, we work to put our seeking, wanting, etc. into perspective by giving less attention to them. Yet, attraction, aversion, hope, and fear are embedded in everything we do and all ways that we are. "Just being in the absence of these influences" seems impossible in an absolute sense for me or anyone.

I choose to live in the world and be a part of it through my work in economic development, my poetry, my relationships, etc. All are identities of sorts. These things are full of the things referred to in the quote Dan posted. It's hard to escape them.

From a pragmatic standpoint, I work to keep these issues in perspective in my life, but they are still there on some level and they propel me. i think most other people I know are the same way.

I guess that is what I was trying to say.

Help?

Blessings.

Don

These four are the three unwholesome roots: attraction = greed; aversion = hatred; hope & fear = delusion. The only way to eliminate them is to be fully mindful of how they arise. I was thinking just along these lines last night, Dan. Thanks for posting! A great book on the topic is The State of Mind Called Beautiful by Sayadaw Pandita.

Yep, that's who I meant.

Don, sorry, not as much as Mike's...

It seems to me that all four of these can be healthy things, in small quanitites - but again with the attachment, or detachment.
