Dan, I'm sure will respond to your question when he gets back. Here are a few of my thoughts.
From my standpoint, we can only "know" our "I am-ness" or "beingness" by developing an inner sense of ourselves that tells us "I am" or "we are." When I say "I am," it is statement that I am be-ing.
The question is who or what is doing? That presumes some thing comes prior to the doing that we observe. The answer, in my case is "I am."
Some spiritual teachers and philosophers would argue that all doing is illusory (not real). Some would also argue there is no permanent self (no fixed personality known as Don, Dan, or Kathy). There is consciousness only, which is everchanging.
We simply are, and yes we do, but our existence (presence) as sentient beings comes before any doing.
It is confusing--all these different views and ideas.
Truthfully, I try to live my life simply and operate on the inner sense I have of myself. Our nature is beyond any words or ideas. That is ultimately what I believe. I use words only to point to the reality that is beyond words.
I try to make room for the universe to work through me each day. Meditation helps me do that.
Dan may have some additional thoughts upon his return. He is far more knowledgeable about the nondual world.

I am that which comes before the doing, and so is Dan. Right?
Kathy,
There is no small knowledge when it's personal.

Let's see what Dan says when he returns.

whatever we may be, we came before words. words can only approximate any truths about us.
