The problem is, how do the religious masses get beyond dogma and ritual unless institutional religion begins to start emphasizing religious experience and the practices that foster it?
In Christianity, the trend seems to be overwhelmingly in the opposite direction.
The planet will never be united around one or the other of the competing dogmas when one of them "wins," contrary to the cherished delusional thinking of otherwise fairly sane people.

Amen Brother Dan. I am reading Wayne Teasdale's The Mystic Heart, which says the same thing.
Supposedly, the Buddha's last words were "Work out your own salvation with diligence."
