"The only obstacle to your Awakening is the mere thought that you are not already Awakened."

Raises again the question: What must we do to awaken?

Sri Ramana would probably say "nothing must be done. Awakening is not a matter of doing."

Don says he must let go of his idea that he is not fully awakened.

That's about what he might say.

The intellectual understanding that one was never in bondage eventually pushes out the belief that one is a separate being. And then one goes beyond even that end of the dualistic dilemma.

Beyond that, you are awake, and only need to let the illusory conditioning 'dissipate' (even though there never was anything to be dissipated).
And by the way, to 'dissipate' means to 'dis-spell'. And anyway, weren't you resting in the awakened state the last few days? YOU KNOW.

Dan, yes I was "being" in a more awakened way during the past few days. It was wonderful.

Then, the old pressures of family and work descend upon me as I re-enter the "Cleveland Universe," and my ego attacks with the force of a thousand cunning dragons.

She says (my ego self): "Well, nice vacation and you succeeded in setting me aside in St. Pete for a few days, but now you're home--you know, the place where you feed me and keep the illusion going that you haven't awakened and can't live without your ego."

But I am aware of these egoic tricks because I have learned to watch my mind and my thoughts and feelings. I smile as I compose this response to my good friend Dan. She steps back into the darkness. I hope she doesn't come back.

Then, suddenly she returns dressed in new clothes. She comes back as my "Inner Spiritual Guide." She proceeds to even take credit for this new "insight" and awakening that I've formed. She says " Oh yes, we were masterful in St. Pete and how you dodged your "old" ego (with my help of course). We bested him. Put him down and banded him from the room. We're special Don, you and me.

"Unlike those other unconscious idiots in St. Pete, we have truly awakened and we will do spiritual teaching and people from all over the world will come to us. They will buy our books, come to our seminars, and more. You will have special intuitive gifts that make you (us) better than others. I am your Buddha within. I am there to serve you in any way I can to make you great."

How cunning! She slips to the other side of the argument by turning from the wounded healer to the spiritually enlightened being. She cares not what position she takes. She only cares that the position serves her and keeps her alive and well-fed.

She stalks me until she finds just the right place to attack. She says "Do you really want to go through this UPR program? What good will that produce? Besides it will take time away from us together. Now that you are "awake" you don't really need this program. Besides, do you know anyone who has really "awakened spiritually? That is an illusion. You may want to "re-think" this whole thing. It's just a bunch of idealistic philosophical crap. What we really need to do is get back to who we really are. You know, get back to that guy who loves his ego, which is by far the most "creative work" he has ever done. You'll never do better than me. Think about it Don."

I am aware of her. Her breath grows stale. It's foulness makes me want to throw up. She keeps at me, but I watch and see her most of the time now. There is no going back. There is only now and what matters is that I am fully present, the only place where she can't exist because the sunlight of the moment reveals who she really is.

From here, I go to sit for a few moments in silent emptiness--again another place where she cannot exist because there is nothing there for her to feed upon.

To be continued...

Aha! Very perceptive, Brother Don. And of course, like everything else, she is empty.
