Patterns of consciousness are always known by pure awareness, their ultimate, unchanging witness.

Consciousness is seen not by its own light but by awareness.

Hi Dan,
What's the context of this quote? Is Patanjali saying that awareness is, in a sense, a level above consciousness in that it is needed to observe consciousness? What observes awareness?

Yes... pure awareness is beyond observation... and yet has found a way to observe itself through it's creations... of "conciousness"....

Yes. Awareness in this context is the One Reality that is without a second, and which subsumes individual consciousness arising from sensory input (including the mind). It's the Awareness that is our True Identity. Nothing could observe Awareness, as it is One without a second, except for the provisional illusory consciousness that it observes...

Hi Dan, did you manage to read Salinger's "Hapworth"? The critical reviews of this story that I found on the net - I thought those were entirely inappropriate. That was NOT a dark work, but a funny and cheerful one. Best, rama
